To add context to my comment, my nieces both ran track

precisely to stay out of the popularity/politics of things like competitive cheer, dance, or gymnastics where winning and losing is purely subjective. At least with track, you just have to check the stopwatch to see who won, and how popular or pretty or connected someone is doesn't matter.
