May be going the way of English League Football. Similar to Premier League.

College Football and Soccer in England have a lot in common.

Soccer in England started at factory teams/town or neighborhood teams that formed athletic clubs. The players were those that worked in the local factory. As things got more serious and beating other clubs was more important, players on the club team devoted themselves full time to the craft. As things got even more serious, the clubs would payout big money to buy the best players from other clubs in the UK and now the world. If the club couldn't keep up financially and athletically, they would bring in foreign investors/ownership.

I see the direction of college football in a similar fashion. Except instead of factory workers, we had college students. Let's face it, most modern Premier League players never saw the inside of a factory. And let's face it, most elite college football players in the modern era have trained all their lives to be athletes, not engineers, doctors, teachers, etc.

But what makes the EFL so great is that with all the money being thrown around, it has merit-based relegation and promotion. So if college football would ever go to this type of system, we wouldn't have to ask "How do we compete with this?". Everyone would be in the division that they should be in competition wise in short order.

I think we can sit around and think of all kinds of rules to prevent people from spending money on what they what to spend money on, and keeping players from making money that would otherwise be on the table for them. Or we can deal with the reality of the situation.
