VT Guards/Wings analyzed via the Advanced metrics.. Interesting stuff!

Nahiem:

Nahiem is #52 out of #61 guards in the ACC in Player Efficiency rating at 8.9 (same as Chris' article) with at least 200 mins played on the season.

Put another way, he is the worst guard in the ACC that has played his mins (456) on the year in PER terms.

No doubt he is having a poor year but CMY is playing him for his defense and the hope he is going to break out of the slump. He has the #18 defensive rating out of all players in the ACC that have played a good bit.. impressive.

Cattoor:

Hunter has a PER of #30 out of #61 with at PER of 15.1. We all know he is a heck of a player and pure shooter w quick release. His numbers are really good and he is all over the ACC leader-board so here is the most notable. Out of all players in ACC he is:

- #11 in True Shooting Percentage
- #6 in Defensive rating (HINT: VT is VERY strong here)

We all know he is a big time Hooper.

Storm:

I have not been down on Storm much this year...(that said, I have plenty of complaints!) but he is a subpar starting PG in this league, thus far, without a doubt.

Storm is #45 out of 61 guards with a PER of 11.6. He is almost completely non-existent in the ACC leaders but is #20 in overall assists. My guess is he is probably playing like the #12 or #13 PG in the conference which is underwhelming. Storm is the worst rated defender (97.8 which I believe is pretty good) on the team who has mins. Nahiem is the 2nd worst and is considered pretty good.. so go figure.

If Nahiem and Storm were in the Alabama back-court they would be #1 and #2. If they were in Wake Forest's, they would be also be #1 and #2.

- I did not realize how truly outstanding our defense really is. (another hint: we have several defenders on our team that are ranked very high, regardless of mins, but we will need to replace a couple)

Maddox:

He is having a good year and has a bright future. He has played 217 mins on the year which is enough for my threshold and puts him at #19 PER out of 61 guards with a rating of 17.4. That is really promising.

His Defensive rating is slightly better than Nahiem, who the stats say is a really good defender. Maddox to Nahiem, offensive rating wise (127.6 to 94.8) is not even in the same league.. albeit at reduced mins . In fact, Maddox has highest offensive rating on the team.

Statistically, Maddox has fantastic numbers on his reduced mins and is super valuable to us. Prob more than we even realize. If Bam was here, Maddox would be less flashy but way more valuable.

Pedulla:

Having a great year. He didn't make the cut on the PER because he has only 135 mins but if he had, he would be so much better than Storm Murphy... would not even be close!

- FWIW, his PER is 17.9 which would probably put him in the top 30% of ACC guards if he could maintain it.

- In his limited mins, Pedulla is considerably better than Storm in BOTH offense and defense. Pedulla is #3 on our team in Offensive efficiency and, if his numbers held, would be one of the best defenders in the ACC! Maybe that is in a vacuum but he certainly passes the eye test. He is fluid, controlled and makes play after play.

Net net, I was surprised about our defense but not at how bad the numbers were on Alleyne. I knew that both Pedulla and Maddox would look much better on paper but that is an understatement. I really have much better hope for our guards/wings going forward... we will need it.

Spoiler alert: I will look into the front court players next. I knew Mutts and Aluma were a great duo.. but they are really really good together. Special credit to GC Hokie for pointing me to the website.
