Actually mRNA vaccines "program" your cells to produce...

...the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which elicits an immune response from your body. There is no live virus involved. I believe the cold storage temperatures required are due to the nanolipid coating that is required to deliver the mRNA into the human body - without this lipid coating, the mRNA won't survive, and the nanolipid coating requires cold temperatures, I think. At least, that's my understanding - I invite someone to correct me if I'm mis-speaking here.

My concern with this technology is that the some doctors have cautioned that the spike protein itself may be cyto-toxic to human cells and could be the reason we're seeing issues like myocarditis. No one knows for sure if that's the case, but it's the main reason I haven't received an mRNA vaccine. If the spike protein is truly toxic, I don't want my cells being programmed to produce an unlimited amount of said protein and distributing it throughout my body.

If I correctly understand the recombinant protein-based technology, that type of vaccine delivers a finite quantity of the spike protein into your body and elicits the same type of immune response as the mRNA vaccines, but it doesn't "program" your body to become a spike protein factory. That sounds safer to me. But again, I am no expert and may be totally off base here.
