To really analyze......


I think you have to break college football into a minimum of three time periods, (1) Pre TV realignment, (2) TV realignment until playoff/pseudo-playoff implementation and (3) Playoff era. Then analyze the different numbers of national champions. I think all the things you mentioned play a role in the shifting parity and the haves/have nots in college football. The period you specifically mention was volatile more so, in my opinion, because you had a number of those factors (TV, scholarship limits, division realignments and beginnings of the playoff format) all existing at the same time.
