Main issue with Fuente: the Head Coach role is simply not for him
He's probably a decent OC or QB coach, and I'm sure he'll land on his feet somewhere in one of those roles. However, he's not well suited at all to being a Head Whistle and all that entails. Especially dealing with the media, fans, alumni groups, etc. It's very important in that job, that's a big part of why you're paid so much, but for whatever reason it just wasn't his thing.
The other big takeaway: culture matters. Fuente was just a bad cultural fit almost from the start in Blacksburg. He knows football, but at the end of the day he's a Midwest (TX, OK) guy and never seemed to "get it" when it came to why Virginia recruiting matters. He also never established any authentic culture that VT players (or fans) could buy into. Our offensive scheme was all over the place, recruiting was scatter-shot and, despite the "Hard, Smart, Tough... GRIT" sloganeering, we were actually none of that once we hit the field.
Pry seems just the opposite, FWIW: very much "our" kind of coach, spent several seasons on Bud Foster's staff, appears to be extremely focused on winning recruiting battles in Virginia, the DMV, and the Carolinas. My initial impression of Pry is that he's just a much more natural fit for our culture at Virginia Tech.
