Del Toro's Nightmare Alley

Very competently made remake of a 1940's film noir classic starring Tyrone Power. The new version (starring Bradley Cooper and a lot of other familiar faces) is very good but not very ENTERTAINING, as it tries very hard to capture the film noir aesthetic but ends up being long and kinda boring in the latter parts of the film.

I watched the original version last night to compare, and the new version hits all the right notes for sure. It's just that what was considered entertaining in the 40s doesn't hold up as well today. The new version keeps the novel's bleak downer of an ending, though, which is better.
