Why wasn't VT more forthcoming about COVID being the issue?

We sounded evasive in our reasoning for the cancellation. "Multiple Virginia Tech student-athletes being unable to compete" was what our press release said. You can twist that a lot of ways. Multiple student-athletes:
1. Have COVID and/or are in quarantine
2. Are in major disciplinary or academic trouble
3. Couldn't make weight
4. Are injured
5. Are in witness protection after stumbling across a major weapons smuggling operation
6. Quit the team to rush fraternities
7. Failed drug tests

Obviously most of the list above is ludicrous and extremely unlikely. However, if the answer is Number 1 (COVID outbreak), why not say so and take the conspiracy theories off the table?
