Stayed in Puna Cana on our honeymoon.

We stayed at the Palladium resorts. 4 resorts all rolled up into one. The town was right outside the gate but we never went there. No real need.

We went on a deep sea fishing charter and took a shuttle through town but had no real intentions of going off resort otherwise. There are plenty of websites / etc. that can give you advice on the Punta Cana outside of the resorts.

"jungle" excursions, sugar cane farms, cigar shops, etc.

Loved it.
