We were soldiers- used to play some golf with a weapons adviser


for the movie. My friend is a retired Army special ops. Sgt. with one eye missing and a 1 USGA handicap! He told me that Mel Gibson didn't know shit about proper military weaponry handling at first so they made a deal that if the Sgt. could train him to fight realistically, Mel would pay for his sister to come on site for a few days and watch the filming at either Ft. Benning or Ft. Hunter Liggett in Monterrey Cal.

It took a few weeks but Mel finally got squared away and the Sgt.'s sister got to see her idol in simulated combat in California. The Director thought that Ft. Hunter Liggett Military Reservation was a dead ringer for Vietnam's la Drang Valley. I have seen this movie several times. It is based on a true story and is heart wrenching for me.
