Duke breaks ground on softball stadium

The $8 million facility—which will feature an entry plaza, batting cages and a team clubhouse—is located at the corner of Broad St. and Markham Ave. and is scheduled to be completed next September.

Duke will start ACC softball play in the spring of 2018. Head coach Marissa Young was hired last July, and has already signed 4 recruits, who will play club softball this coming year.

Young was a three-time All-America selection as a pitcher at the University of Michigan and was named the 2002 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and 2003 Big Ten Player of the Year. Young was the head coach at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Mich., from 2008-11. In less than three years, she turned the 2-20 program to a 23-23 record, the second-most wins in a single season since an appearance in the 2002 NAIA National Tournament. She then spent two years as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan and two years at UNC as a pitching coach.

It will be nice to have another team in the league to make it an even dozen.
