I don't think 'steering' is the way to characterize it........


because outright recruiting or steering is probably frowned on by the USA Baseball program. But yes it would help recruiting.

Many college coaches say the recruiting process starts during the summer making the rounds of camps to identify talent. If a coach is a talent evaluator for the USA Baseball program, that process is accelerated in that the best of the best are coming to him.

The next step in recruiting is establishing a relationship. What better relationship is there than a coach-player? Once again, this is easier.

Look at some of the other coaches on the USA program. Dan Hartlieb (highly successful Illinois Coach), Spencer Allen (Northwestern coach considered one of the bright rising stars), Tom Walter (Wake Forest coach - a program that passed us this year) and Rob Dadeaux, the legend from USC.

All in all, it is not any different than the model that Coach K has created with USA Basketball. At the very least, it would have created some much needed respect for the VT program.
