I participated in my second Hokiebirdie Golf Classic yesterday at the River Course. This is the event that is a fundraiser for our women's golf team but more than that is an opportunity to meet and interact with our still pretty new womens golf team. I cannot think of another sport that offers you the opportunity to meet and visit with each team member and I recommend you take in next year's event if you have the time.

The tourney is a captain's choice format so you have teammates in case you happen to miss a shot (or two). But Coach Robertson placed her seven golfers out on the course at different holes where they hit a shot for each team. In fact if you don't like the shot they hit, and most were tee shots, they would hit another and another until everyone was happy. The best part though was the few minutes you got to spend meeting and talking with each player. Learning where they are from and what they are studying, etc. What outstanding representatives of Virginia Tech! The majors they are studying are really challenging.

There was one new wrinkle this year that was worth noting. Hole #7 is a par 3 of about 125 yards. This hole featured two freshmen golfers, Sarah and Jessica Spicer, twins from Durham, NC. One player hit the tee shot while the other was stationed at the green and putted for our team. The easiest birdie we recorded all day!

The team has it's first match on Sunday immediately following the Battle at Bristol and it is at the University of Tennessee. The ladies seem intent on helping the Hokies to a double header sweep to start the season.
