Therein lies the attraction to VT for a lot of people.
who work there. Granted there is a fine line between being compassionate and creating a family atmosphere and allowing someone to take unreasonable advantage of the institution's kindness and generosity but, VT's history shows it lives the motto recently put forth that "This is Home" and there is a balance between business and "family" decisions. Sure it can turn out bad if someone takes advantage of this willingness to work with people, however, it can also turn out to be a very positive situation if handled properly.. While some would contend Coach Beamer held on too long, I believe his transition reflects how VT's family approach can have huge benefits and differentiate the University and athletic Department from some places run with a more cutthroat business approach. Hopefully an approach that will pay huge dividends in the future in attracting and retaining personnel that comes down to more than a bottom line decision.
