This question piqued my interest, and I had nothing better to do than ...


...research it. I found that various sources disagree about standard usage of these words. Most, though, say that while these words were used interchangeably historically, their use is more precise today. Thus, we use "ensure" for "guarantee, or make something happen, or do what's necessary for success." And we use "insure" for "guarantee against a loss, or cover with an insurance policy." I'm sure that the whole world—Hokieworld in particular—is interested in this topic! ;)
