Would that be that much different than the pro leagues?


FWIW the NFL (formerly known as the APFA) had only 14 teams during its inaugural season (1920). The AFL only had 8 teams during its inaugural season (1960). I suspect you would find similar type numbers for other North American pro leagues (including ones that have folded) when they first launched.
