There are lots of issues

As many of you have pointed out. However, there are some fundamentals that they would have in place: existing teams and leagues, tradition, affinity from the African American market, etc. And of course, the fact that the top level players are significantly underpaid, with just tuition as their compensation.

To make it work, it would require a major investor like Philip Anschutz has been for MLS, A 5 to 10 year horizon, and endorsements from significant basketball figures who are fed up with the NCAA. I think it is possible.

If it started to catch hold, it would force the NCAA to start to pay players, or the power conference is to split off from the NCAA and start to pay players.

All things considered, it probably won't work because of the two issues you all cited: lack of funding, and the fact that the affinity that most of us have for our schools drives much of the interest in college basketball.

Eventually something will force the structure to change so that the star athletes receive commensurate compensation.
