Found an even better solution in the comments
Shimano made a Hyperglide hub that is interchangeable with a Uniglide hub. You unbolt the old Uniglide and bolt on the compatible Hyperglide, then you can use any Hyperglide cassette. The hub costs ~$25 (with shipping) on Ebay. With that I should be able to install any 7-speed Hyperglide cassette. Hub and cassette should cost 1/4 the price of a "used" Uniglide cassette. That's what I was looking for!
One day I'll buy a road bike built in this century, but until then I'll keep my perfectly good ancient road bike in operation. It's in pretty good shape.
Until I discovered several broken teeth on the cassette cogs, the only hardware I planned to replace was the old "re-packable" bottom bracket with a sealed unit. Everything else was being taken apart, cleaned, lubed, then reassembled.
As for wear items, I installed new tires, tubes & rim protector strips, and I'll install new brake pads when they arrive (tomorrow?).
It's good to get to know my bicycles again!
