Ever met a billionaire?
Me either, but I did sit behind one in church last Sunday.
When visitors were asked to stand up and introduce themselves at the beginning of church the other day, an older gentleman (maybe in his 60s) stood up in front of me and introduced him, his wife, and his son as "The R.J. Kirk family."
I recognized that name. R.J. is the billionaire founder of New River Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired in 2007 for $2.6 billion. I have never met him before, but I did meet his son about ten years ago.
I didn't bother him by introducing myself, because I wouldn't have introduced myself to any non-billionaires sitting in front of me at church, either.
The biggest kick I got out of it was when my 15-year-old daughter (anti-SHUN rule in effect) said after church, "Those people in front of us had money." She had noticed the brands they were wearing. I said, "Yeah, he's a billionaire," and explained to her who he is. She was quite taken aback that she had been that close to a billionaire and talked the rest of the day about how R.J. Kirk is "worth 15 times as much as Justin Bieber," her measuring stick for wealth and fame.
R.J. is from Dublin, Virginia and graduated from Radford University. Now, THAT, I didn't know. Forbes' most recent list of billionaires has him at #564 in the world, with a net worth of $3.4 billion.
