Disagree. France tried to come back in and restore their colony

Colonialism was their thing, and it was as much pride driven as anything else. It had been a terrible colony for them for almost 100 years -- they had never really integrated at all and never really understood the culture. So it was doomed to fail.

The US on the other hand was looking to stop the spread of communism. Post Korean war that was the big fear and it blinded everyone in the government. We didn't want to take over. We didn't want to be an invader. We wanted to help the South stem the tide of Northern communism. We were in a limited advisory role and all was well until China and Russia got involved. The South wasn't able to handle that ramp up on their on and the US slowly got sucked into it more and more.
