We're on the same train of thought.
My daughter actually told me years later that we handled that kind of thing better than a lot of her friend's parents. She said it made a bigger impact on her.
Kind of like when she was getting awful grades in high school. I told her that it was ok, school is not for everyone and not everyone should go to college. I said it was perfectly acceptable to not go to college because every community needs hairdressers, grocery clerks etc - everyone can't be a doctor or lawyer.
A few years later, after she went to community college and got a 4.0 then transferred to VT, she told me that it was that conversation that got her to flip the switch and do better. She thought, hell no, I'm not going to be a grocery clerk! Lol.
