Not sure, but definitely not venomous...
poor guy was wrong place, wrong time.
It pays to know the venemous snakes in your area and to be able to identify juveniles and adults. In my area, we have copperheads and timber rattlers. Both are super easy for me to identify and I pretty much exterminate on the spot because I have kids and a dog to keep safe. I have absolutely zero problem handling snakes myself, but kids and dog-boy are my priority... venomous cannot stay. I had a copperhead encounter while barefoot and with my dog just a few days ago... don’t show up with that head and the hour glass draped across your body if you don’t want the tamper.
I pick bunches of garter, black rat, black racer, etc. out of places around my house and return them to the woods on a regular basis. They eat pests and are harmless. Snakes are awesome to have around, but both people and snakey snake need to have an understanding.
