Technicians are only going to make average money. Only way a tech is going to make better than average is if it's a specialty NDT process such as eddy current analysis or x-ray crystallography.

One area to consider, and you may not need to go "back to school" for, is IR videography. IR has exploded in usefulness here in recent years as they have improved performance to be able to detect gases, so it's being used in oil and gas to detect leaks in the process. Attaching one to a drone and you can survey an oil pumping station in 20 minutes compared to a few hours with a technician. Get a drone pilot license and learn to operate the camera and you're making good money.
