We went to this model years ago. In fact one of our companies is "agile."


which means that it's basically cafeteria style seating. You walk in, find a space and sit down and start working. It was supposed to promote collaboration, but people, being creatures of habit, always sit in the exact same seat. Our Washington DC office is a prime example: I go there twice a year and know exactly where to find people because they've been sitting in the same place for years.

As far as low cubes go, our main company employs that model and while noise can be an issue, white noise generators help out a ton with it. It's not like you can hear a conversation 20' away... just in your immediate area, which again, is supposed to promote collaboration.

Thank GOD I work from home mostly.
