They recently changed the gas tax so that it's indexed for inflation.


Virginia used to have a flat so-many-cents-per-gallon gas tax, but since 2013 it's been 3.5% of the statewide price per gallon of gasoline. So as gas prices go up, so does gas tax, which is far better than the old system.

But they didn't set it high enough. It should be closer to 7% or 8% in order to generate enough revenue to fund all the Commonwealth's highway improvement and maintenance requirements.
