As a broader, sustained trend…1998 was really the turning point


We definitely had a good year in-state in 1994 with Oxendine as a headliner but we followed that up with three years of landing the same or less players than UVA in the state top 10 as ranked by the Roanoke Times.

In the linked table, it shows 1998 as the real turning point. UVA missed out on Ronald Curry and landed no top 5 in state and just one top 10 while we landed Michael Vick and a total of five top 10 in state. Ultimately, 1998 marked the start of a 13 year period where we landed the same or more top 10 in-state prospects than UVA in 12 of 13 years and during that time had twice as many top 10 recruits than they did (53 vs. 26).
