It's definitely true. I read on Flo that the NLWC has a worth of over 5 million dollars. That is very appealing to wrestlers who want to continue after college. Also I think what is overlooked is that in the last 30 years the sport has evolved from it's rural and urban roots to a place where the wrestlers from wealthy families have distinct advantages. Many of the top guys can easily afford to go to the program of their choice regardless of financial aid.
