The ponied up for Texeira and were turned down. They've had numerous competitive offers for other FAs turned down. Yes, I know about deferred payments. But the offers were still competitive and for big dollars.

They absolutely WON'T overpay for mediocre talent.

They DO seem to like going cheap when they think they can get away with it, and the manager position has been one of those spots. But since they've unequivocally staked out the "World Series or Bust" position it wouldn't be surprising to see them pay big bucks for a big name.
