-Science is basically the study, understanding and application, of the natural world around us; it allows us as logical, methodological reasoned beings to quantify measure and document our own existence on this earth.

-Engineering is the application of science to further a human desire.

Rocketry is engineering. size of nozzles, aerodynamics, etc., is all engineering; not science fiction. He knows all that because someone smarter than him figured all that out through SCIENCE and documented it; and then someone else took that science and gave it a human purpose. That is engineering. He gained that knowledge through science; if it was science fiction, he wouldnt be 'Fixin to launch a rocket.
