They can get pretty sophisticated by spoofing the Caller ID.

Remember hearing about a "double spoof" where they initially called from the "IRS" (caller ID spoof) demanding money, then followed that up with a caller ID (spoof) from their local sheriff's office.

That was the best scam I'd heard to date...
