We have a button like that at the USO Lounge at IAD.

And a panic button. Part of security procedures. I'm pretty sure the lock button also notifies MWAA. Our button locks the door completely in/out. There is a separate noticeable red button near the door that you can push when you decide you want to go out if it's been locked.
