They charge for the recruiting ads for one


If you post for a job opening in SF, it was $75 per ad, at least it was 10 years ago when I last did it. In some other cities it was $25, and others it was free.

The strategy with the recruiting ads was to get a beachhead by making it free and then start charging, and raising the price over time as popularity increases. Very effective when you consider what a membership on Dice or other recruiting sites cost(thousands a year per user).
