He is on the air because he


has a very unique style, is usually articulate, is instantly recognizable and creates discussion (like this one) because he is opinionated - and discussions create ratings.

More people you have never heard of have been fired from jobs like his due to low ratings than have been fired because they rub some people the wrong way.

For the record, I usually turn the channel whenever I hear him, as I do for several people whose style I don't care for and/or find annoying. i.e. Dick Vitale is another example. Doesn't mean I think that every one of their opinions is wrong - just don't like how it is delivered.
