R1 you knew the rest of the story but the characters did not..

so satisfying ending in that they would never know whether it would be success or not (at least as live people) but had faith. Very satisfying ending.

And you could argue it filled a hole from the original starwars that "oh, Leia had the plans for the death star, now, how exactly did that happen"? The original Starwars was genius because it had all these unexplained things, Jedi etc. but that plausibly explained why she had the plans and that there was a flaw in the design. a few too long scenes but... good movie.
