If the only issue is bearings on a fan motor
Then pull out the motor, see what kind it is, get a comparable replacement from Grainger, and replace it.
Had the same issue with my 20+ year old furnace. Replaced the motor for about $100, and it kept on humming.
Or, if you are a REAL cheapskate, just get the bearings replaced in the motor. Can probably get that done for under $50.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of our disposable society, at least when it comes to big-ticket items. Fixing things isn't that hard, but sometimes finding someone willing to fix it is.
I can certainly see how, if you call an HVAC tech to look at your system, they will simply see that it is 20 years old and any effort they might have put into fixing the problem comes to a dead stop. At that point, all they will ever do is give you a quote for a new system. [Post edited by Tafkam Hokie at 01/09/2018 4:52PM]
