Even if you've never seen the movies, surely you have an idea about the

story?

Episodes 4-6 follow Luke Skywalker's journey from moisture farm boy to Jedi Knight (that's a good guy) and his quest to redeem his father, Anakin.

Episodes 1-3 follow Anakin Skywalker's journey from slave boy to Jedi Councilman, and subsequent fall to darkness as a Sith Lord (that's a bad guy).

George Lucas had the whole thing planned out in 1975, or whenever it was he came up with it. He hadn't written the whole thing, but he knew how it was generally going to go. When the time came to sell it to a studio, he figured the Luke story would be a better pitch than the Anakin story. So he made Episodes 4-6 first, and didn't come back to do Episodes 1-3 until 15 years after Episode 6 was released.
