I had a similar thought reading that thread.

First of all, I am a planner/saver...always thinking about the future. So it's not in my nature to spend frivolously on things now instead of saving "for the future". But my best friend is at the opposite end of the spectrum. He is still single, has no strings attached, and has spent most of the past few years traveling the world. He does freelance work online, so he can basically work from anywhere, and he makes enough money to cover his expenses (I think). We had a similar conversation, and he made the point that lots of people spend their lives working themselves to death in order to save for retirement, and then they die before they actually get to retire and enjoy the fruits of their labor. It is a valid point, and it has changed the way I think about things to some extent.

I think there is probably a healthy balance between making sure we take time to enjoy life, spend time with loved ones, and recharge our "batteries" while still planning for the future. Outliving my money is not something I care to experience, and I do worry about my friend having to work until he dies because he didn't save for retirement. But then again, I guess it all really depends on how long we all live...which no one can predict.
