My 2006 Lexus GS300 with 170K miles and great engine and body is now going to cost me over $6,000 to replace original transmission with a rebuilt one.

The geniuses at most car manufacturers thought they could advertise their cars as "maintenance free" and low service costs by not changing some fluids at all.

I'm the original owner and the car has been to Lexus every 5,000 miles for their service. Why, oh why have they designed a system to eventually break down like this. Fluids need to be changed at least every 50K or 100K for things like transmissions and coolants.

It seems like most cars built these days have sealed transmissions. Yes there are reasons they thought about as outlined in the attached article, but they should find a way to warn owners and give them some say as to how to best maintain a car.

Has anybody else had this problem? What did you do about it to get the dealer to fix it? How will you approach your next car purchase knowing this?
