Random Mostly non-VT Tournament Thoughts

1 - Favorite moments: 1) ZZ scramble against Preisch. 2) Haught pins Darmstadt 3) McFadden pins Marinelli. Like DMF and Sal from the previous two years, I enjoyed the complete joy of ZZ after clinching All American status, particularly after the disappointment of the two previous tourneys.

2 - Will Spencer Lee clear out the 125 weight class over the next three years? He was very impressive all tournament and had his way with Suriano. There's already talk from Rutgers fans of him moving up a weight class. I wonder how many 125 AA's will move up to 133 assuming Lee stays at 125. He'll certainly cast a large shadow over redshirting decisions for the next couple recruiting classes. Coaches with a blue chip 125 will almost certainly use redshirts to separate their kid from Lee.

3 - Speaking of possible four time national champions, I'm looking forward to watching Cornell over the next few years. Yianni and Darmstadt were two of my favorite non-Hokie grapplers to watch. Darmstadt seemed like he was at least 6'6" when wrestling Haught. Yianni is so good technically already and per the commentators on Saturday night a huge student of the sport. Throw in McHenry and they'll be one of the more exciting teams over the next four years.

4 - Valencia/Hall II was excellent. I want Valencia-Nickal I in 2019 especially if Ryan does indeed redshirt Martin to create separation and make another team national title run in 2020.

5 - I don't see NC State losing much steam despite the graduation of Macchiavello, Renda, and Jack. Fausz was unselfish wrestling at 125 this year. I think cutting to 125 hurt his performances particularly at the NCAAs. Fausz/Wilson at 133/141 will be just as formidable as Wilson/Jack this year.

State won't miss a beat with Reenan at 184 next year. He'll contend for an AA next year despite 184's depth. Macchiavello will be the hardest to replace.

Pop has built a great program in Raleigh. Here's to VT-NC State lifting the ACC to national prominence over the next several years.

Bring on the Moore-Wilson, Lewis-Hidlay (?), and ZZ-Reenan battles.

6 - Goodbye Snyder. Hello Steveson. Future 4 time champion? I'm encouraged Steveson is staying in state as opposed to joining Penn State like Hall.

7 - The depth at 165 and 184 was ridiculous this year. ZZ AA'ing in the most difficult NCAA field he has faced is an even more impressive accomplishment.

8 - Credit to the Lock Haven kid who wrestled Zain in the 149 final. I thought for sure Zain was headed for BPs.

9 - Bo MF'ing Nickal. Who cares about the mic skills? That pin was crazy. As the announcer said on Saturday, 'he has every move for every situation.'
