Maui is the perfect livable mix of all islands (IMO). Kauai... is magical.

The flight there is a lot easier if you plan a day in LA both ways. Personally it's not an issue for me as my Mom's from New Zealand and I spent almost every summer there as a kid. Hawaii is a short flight in comparison :)
