Couple of issues with that


1 - It was a gas water heater, not electric. But still, that probably means it was either the thermostat or a solenoid.

2 - Figuring out which part was bad was going to be a bit of trial and error because I didn't have a wiring diagram and couldn't find one on the internet.

3 - At the time, I thought I'd have to order any replacement parts I did need (later I became aware of an appliance parts shop in town that didn't really advertise that probably would have had what I needed).

So, yeah, if I'd had a week to wait for parts and do the troubleshooting, I probably could have fixed it. But it was still 25 years old and I had no hot water. That was a problem that kinda needed to get solved that day. Buying a new one, loading it on the truck, and swapping it out was something I could do that day.
