I find self checkout to be a breath of fresh air.
This obviously isn't a grocery-related anecdote, but today I had to buy 40 blank electrical box cover plates at Lowe's. The older cashier was very nice, but insisted on scanning the UPC on EVERY cover, despite the fact that they were all identical. I politely asked if she could just count the items and then manually enter the quantity, which is what virtually every other cashier I've ever encountered would do, but she said that policy is to scan every item. Then she asked me to arrange them all on the checkout counter so that she could scan them. Sigh.
I HATE when I have to go through the standard checkout process at any store because in my opinion, cashiers are frequently frustrating to interact with. I'll usually go out of my way and walk to the other end of the store in order to find a self checkout line. Not counting the time usually saved by not waiting in a line, I can generally scan my items and pay much faster in self checkout than if I go through a standard checkout line. I didn't do that today because I didn't want to have to manually scan 40 items...but in hindsight, that would have been easier.
