This is the kind of discussion I was hoping for

Yes, it's a little populist and you give a couple of good examples where that probably would not have worked out as well - by today's standards.

The French Revolution was also a populist movement. Judgments by elitists, forced on a population don't often work out too well either.

Who gets to define which side is "wrong" and should be upset? The mob? a king? religion? group of elites? I don't mean murder, rape, etc. - although throughout history even that changes (king's right, death penalty, etc.)

Today we use elected leaders and appointments to make such judgments, I can't think of a better way.

IMHO it's very hard to judge people of the past by today's standards - some were just average people doing things the way they had always been done - until you get enough people with that gut feeling that - that isn't right - a little bit of a populist movement --(just three people, sing it with feeling) :) If you want a good example of that, check out how Arlo use to sing that song over 50 years ago and how he does now.

I've typed, and then erased a dozen other statements, because they could all be interpreted as relating to today's decision - not going there.
