I believe ownership right or wrong wanted Trotz to honor the already signed agreement. If he won the Stanley cup he was automatically extended for several years with the $300K increase. Since he signed the contract coaching contracts have skyrocketed and Trotz wanted a better deal, ownership didn't want to deal.

Not saying one is right over the other but I can certainly understand both sides.
