Considering I live 20 minutes from downtown B'more

it's been a while since I've been over there. Visited a music venue on a little bay side park in Canton that looks out on the water. It had an industrial view just like the land around it, oil tanks, warehouses, real docks. I think I passed a WWII "Victory Ship" on the way in. We could see the backside of the Domino Sugar sign in the distance.

Anyway, a couple bands I wanted to see, The Mother Hips from California, not so much for them but because the lead single is Nicki Bluhm's ex, he also managed to severely injure himself in one of those flying body suits a few years back. Think that's why she left him. Also wanted to see the lovey Rachel Price toss her hair as part of Lake Street Dive. A little disappointed that in the youtube videos they are a little bit more quirky covering songs like LOLA and Love Shack, tonight she was more of a soul diva.

As a side note, this was all put on by WTMD Towson's college station which, you know, sounds like a college station playing lots of different stuff you never heard before. I think Weasel of WHFS fame has a segment on there. (I laughed when I read the the digital message on my car radio "Yes, that Weasel") Bottom line, though, is you always need one good edgy college station on your radio dial. VT had one when I was there, played the Ramones a lot.

I think I enjoyed an intervening third act the most Van Williams from Kodiak AK mainly because he sounded like the type of stuff you would hear on a college station, maybe because I didn't expect anything I was pleasantly surprised. Even bought the CD for $10, he signed it, told him to bring some halibut next time, (one song was about being the son of a fisherman, a really hard job.) Baltimore is a hop skip and a jump from where I live but feels like a different place in the world.

Can't say I'd really recommend any of these as must-see, but a little bit of an adventure, enjoyed them all.

PS Not a fan of Brewer's Art Penguin Pils, pretty blah. Bike Virginia puts them to shame for keeping beer ice cold, this was almost room temperature: bleck.
