Colleges are changing because academicians want to get paid...
and like any business they are catering to the clientele and are getting out of the standards business letting (real) businesses deal with the triage. It's kinda why Sand's comment about increasing enrollment to 50k bothers me. (and remember this is happening at every other college too...) Why? Sorta like internet companies they will then look for more product to sell, why you get all these ersatz majors that don't lead to jobs.
It's funny too because some of the kids in the article are saying the right things, I like the desire to talk "face-to-face" , or the comment about "focused on debt and insist that they get skills and experiences that will lead to a career." Well how-de-do. But I get the feeling that colleges are being run for the sake of the academicians, not the students. Student aid is for them, to maintain their little political coteries, not for the students. Sec of Ed Arne Duncan announced days before the Trump inauguration that the default rate on student loans was much higher than previously reported. Oops. well the schools got their money and the efforts "forgive" debts to those unemployed graduates doesn't involve them anymore, maybe if they had a little more blood in the game....
