Not quite the same, but I got let go while my boss was on vacation

Friday was the big layoff day. The axeman cometh all around and everyone is watching people clean out their desks. About 20-25% of the employees were axed, but I make it through the day unscathed.

Except, my boss was on vacation that day. And they did all the notifications via your supervisor, not via HR.

He shows up Monday morning and I went into his office right at 8am and had to bluntly ask whether or not I worked there anymore. As a matter of fact, no, I don't. Well, sorta, they gave me a 30 day notice...and I found another job before the 30 days were up, so I was able to quit before the 30 days.

That was when I found the razor-thin line between being laid off and "moving on to pursue other interests." Everyone else got shown the door, but I got the farewell luncheon from my coworkers. Also still got my severance package :-)
