College Savings

Curious what ev'ry one else is doing for college savings given the last 30 years?
Full disclosure, we have a 5 year old. When he was born, I plopped a lump sum and started a 529 plan at $500/month in order to keep up with the 4-5% of college inflation costs against an overall inflation of ~2%. By my guess, at our current savings rate, he'll be able to attend any state school and a good chunk of out of state (We live in South Carolina).
My concern is if there is a Fed-level policy change...I'm contemplating on halting the 529 plan and associated tax free growth benefits and converting to a Trust. My concern is that by the time the year ~ 2035 rolls around, there will be fully subsidized, or highly subsidized college, along with both gov and private loan forgiveness (remember, circa 2007/8, banks are "too big to fail"). If that is the case, and we're all in on 529, then we're sitting on a $250-300k chunk of change that we cannot use because of policy change.
What are others doing who have kids around this age (5 or younger)? Has anyone heard anything on what will happen to 529 plans if there is a policy change...will they convert to IRAs, turn over to open end mutual funds, etc.?

Maybe. "An administrator" is pretty vague. -- Pylons 08/14/2018 11:53AM
It's not the first place I would start, certainly. -- hoosnowahokie 08/14/2018 11:25AM

Ok, so $130k is for *full* professor, which -- Pylons 08/14/2018 11:59AM
  Absolutely. -- Pylons 08/14/2018 12:47PM
