Yep, we are in the same boat

I looked at other ways to lower our tax bill because we went from getting 2-3K back from the Government to paying 2-3K even after having 2 kids, while my wife's and my salary haven't gone up immensely it apparently has gone up enough to push us over the edge. We don't qualify for Roth IRA at all. So I am going to start looking at putting money into my wife's HSA every year to further reduce our tax burden. Its funny though you are basically penalized for living "modestly" I say modestly because we bought a 500K house in the DC area and if you are from this area you know that isn't exactly rich. Now we bought during the downturn so it is worth 700K but the only significant change in our taxes has been our salaries going up but the big one is the amount of interest we are paying on the house each year has gone down. Its like Government taxes expect you to buy BIGGER!

Back to our conversation, looks like you and I are both trying to figure out how to protect our money.

I like Synaesthesia's idea, use it has a house loan should work but only for the first 4 years of college though because housing costs count but what are you going to do with the remainder. Certainly worth looking into but I have questions.
