Yeah, that's usually called a managed switch


A managed switch will let you do all sorts of things depending on how fancy it is. VLANs, QoS, Spanning Tree (in oversimple terms, deals with multiple routes across a network to the same computer), etc.

An unmanaged switch just says a computer with this MAC address is plugged into this port, if I get an Ethernet frame with that destination MAC address, I'm sending it to that port only.
